A look at what we’ve been working on these past few weeks. We set up the trellis system for the tomatoes.
And planted our tomatoes and peppers.
Hung up the trellis strings.
And watched as the voles sucked down a few tomato plants.
Going, going, gone. Never knew anything liked eating tomato plants. Good thing I have a few extras.
Our fence is now complete! The fencers came and stretched the wire in one day, transforming our landscape here forever.
The gates are all up and the fields are now deer-free!
Next step is to get some cover crops planted out there to get the soil working. It’s going to take some time to reclaim this area from the sumac, poison ivy, and wild blackberry vines whose roots lurk beneath the surface.
We finished work on the perennial rows with mulching, un-mulching, fertilizing, and adding compost. Haven’t seen any asparagus activity yet.
With the beautiful warmer weather we’ve been hustling to get as many plants in the ground as possible. Had a nice rain yesterday to water them all in. We should be seeing some explosive growth soon!
The garlic is looking good.
I found someone’s tooth in one of the beds we were working on. Never know what you’re going to dig up out there.
The greens are starting to flower in the little tunnel.
But that’s okay, we eat those too. They are a delicacy. I saute shiitake mushrooms in butter and olive oil and then add the rapini to wilt briefly at the end. Sprinkle with salt and shave some hard cheese on top. So delicious, so spring.

This is my favorite time of year, when the earth is just waking up. Our hearts rejoice with each new leaf and birdsong. Goodbye winter.
